UPDATED EMERGENCY ACTION ALERT FROM THE FREE MUMIA ABU-JAMAL COALITION
- 03/31/2015

At 1 PM Monday, Mumia Abu-Jamal had a medical emergency and was taken to the Intensive Care Unit at Schuylkill Medical Center in Pottsville, Pennsylvania.  Mumia’s family is currently waiting there, but prison officials at SCI Mahanoy are blocking all family visits and we have NO trust they will inform his family about Mumia’s condition. So far his family has only been told that he's in diabetic shock and is receiving an insulin drip. He is shackled to the bed. For the past three months he has been suffering from an extreme eczema outbreak.

In December, in alarmingly similar circumstances, political prisoner Phil Africa of the MOVE organization was suddenly hospitalized and denied family visits as well as medical updates, and within a week he died.

Please immediately call SCI Mahanoy Superintendent John Kerestes at (570) 773-2158 x8102.

If you can, also call:

·      John Wetzel, Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections at (717) 728-4109.

·      Richard Ellers, Director of the Department of Corrections Health Care Services at (717) 728-5311.

Demand that Mumia's family be granted hospital visitation rights and that he be seen by outside doctors.  Say you are calling about prisoner Wesley Cook.

It's especially important to get well-known individuals and major organizations to participate.

Calls have been pouring in from all over the world. Supporters will hold a press conference outside the hospital at 11 AM Tuesday about this emergency. The Abolitionist Law Center is preparing legal action to gain family access to Mumia and access to his medical records so that independent doctors can intervene.

Pam Africa of MOVE says, "Prison officials are lying.  Mumia is going through torture at the hands of Department of Corrections through medical neglect.   It is clear to people that they want to kill Mumia.  They gave him the wrong medication which made his condition worse. Inmates on the inside who questioned what was happening have been subjected to direct retaliation by the superintendent.   They have been moving concerned inmates out of Mumia's unit in an effort to both bury and keep this critical information from the public."
